I-15 Express Link Project Update

I-15 EXPRESSLINK; 500 North to I-215 Design/Build Project Update 3.4.10

I-15 will be reduced to two lanes in each direction nightly beginning March 5 for approximately two weeks. Southbound U.S. 89 to Beck Street will be reduced to one lane during off-peak hours beginning March 10 for approximately two weeks. Please see below for more information. For your convenience, new information and upcoming traffic impacts appear in red text. Continuing impacts are in blue.


Upcoming scheduled activities:

 

On U.S. 89/Beck Street:
LANE RESTRICTIONS: Beginning March 10, southbound U.S. 89 to Beck Street will be reduced to one lane near the Beck Street Bridge during off-peak hours (approximately 9 a.m. to 5 a.m.). This lane restriction will be in place for approximately two weeks. Crews will be driving piles and performing other work associated with construction of the new northbound Beck Street Bridge.

 

On I-15:
LANE RESTRICTIONS: Beginning March 5, northbound I-15 will be restricted to two lanes nightly (from approximately 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.) for approximately two weeks. During this activity, there will be two lanes in each direction and the moveable barrier will be moved in the early morning to open southbound I-15 to 3 lanes by 5 a.m.

 

Progress Update:

·         Crews continue work on the overhead center-running freeway lighting system. Over half the lights have been turned on and crews are working hard to complete installation as efficiently as possible.

·         Crews have poured the deck of the new 1000 North Bridge and the concrete is now curing. The bridge is expected to open this spring and will maintain the same access to I-15 that existed before construction. It will include an on-ramp to northbound I-15 (opening in Fall 2010), a southbound off-ramp from I-15 to the intersection of 900 West and 900 North (opening in spring 2010), and an on-ramp to southbound I-15 (already open). The bridge will also provide east/west access to Warm Springs Road. A graphic of this bridge is available on our website

·         Drilled shaft work continues in order to stabilize the area underneath the new Beck Street Bridge so that above-ground construction can begin. More information about this activity is available on our website.


Other Information:

900 West southbound on-ramp:
The on-ramp from 900 West to southbound I-15 reopened at the beginning of this phase. Motorists travelling on I-15 mainline should be prepared for ramp traffic merging onto the mainline near 900 West. Please slow down or move over to allow ramp traffic room to merge.


Warm Springs Road Business Access:
Area businesses are OPEN. Access to Warm Springs Road is available from southbound I-15 via the newly opened southbound 2300 North on- and off-ramps. Access to Warm Springs Road is also available by taking 600 North to Redwood Road to 2300 North.

 

Continuing Impacts:

 

Inside the Closure on I-15 (the old northbound side):

Excavation, grading, and milling are occurring on the old northbound side. Other activities inside the closure include pile driving, utility, and drainage work. Crews continue work on the overhead highway lighting system and MSE walls throughout the corridor.

 

Ongoing Ramp Closures:
The following ramps will be CLOSED throughout this phase (January-Fall):

·         The northbound 2300 North on and off-ramps and

·         The northbound off-ramp from I-15 to U.S. 89.

·         Additional shorter-term ramps closures are expected later in this phase. More information will be made available as schedules are confirmed.

On Warm Springs Road:

Flaggers: Flagging operations are in effect on Warm Springs Road near 2300 North and the Beck Street Bridge. These operations will be in place for several months are crews remove the old Beck Street Bridge and begin building the new one. Please proceed carefully and follow flagger instructions.

 

PLEASE SLOW DOWN & PAY ATTENTION WHEN DRIVING IN THE WORK ZONE. Lane widths have been narrowed and the speed limit is 55 mph throughout the project corridor.


Alternate Routes:

UDOT advises motorists to take alternate routes whenever possible during construction.

Suggested alternate routes include Legacy Parkway, I-215, I-80, and U.S. 89. UTA Frontrunner also provides a pleasant and efficient way to avoid construction entirely.

UDOT encourages you to “know before you go” by checking www.commuterlink.utah.gov for real time traffic conditions, accident alerts and other commute information.

 

Support your local businesses:

Area businesses on Warm Springs Road are open. Southbound traffic is advised to use I-215 to Redwood Road to 2300 North to access Warm Springs Road. Alternately, area businesses can be accessed via Beck Street to 1800 North to Warm Springs Road.
